Disabling the Viewer Media Options

If you travel around Second Life a lot, visiting sims, shopping and so on, the safest way to do so is to make sure your media options are disabled. You won’t actually miss out on anything; you’ll still hear all the ambient noises associated with Second Life, and so on. You just won’t hear music and the like being constantly played over any active media streams.

If you have venues you trust, such as a favourite club, you can always turn your music media streaming back on when visiting it – just remember to turn it off again before you visit elsewhere. Similarly, your own home location (if you have one) should also be safe for you to have media playing.

If you prefer, you can help protect your privacy by using the Viewer Media Filter.

Disabling Media Options in Viewer 1.x

Media streaming options for Viewer 1.x Viewers can be found under EDIT -> PREFERENCES ->AUDIO AND VIDEO:

You should make sure the following options are all UNCHECKED:

  • Enable streaming music when available
  • Enable streaming media when available
  • Automatically play media
  • Let scripts control my media button.

When you have unchecked these options, click on APPLY and close the Preferences window. You do not have to re-start your Viewer for them to take effect.

Should you opt to use the Media Filter, you will need to re-enable both Enable streaming music and Enable streaming media options once more. However, do not re-enable either Automatically play media or Lets scripts control my media button.
