SL scheduled maintenance – next 3 days

Grid maintenance 8 through 10 May, commencing 18:00 SLT, for up to 8 hours. Disruption expected.

The following has been posted in on the SL Grid Status page:

[Posted 9:45am PDT, 8 May 2012] We will be performing scheduled maintenance today, Wednesday and Thursday of this week (May 8, May 9, May 10), beginning at 6:00pm PDT each day. Each maintenance is scheduled to last around 8 hours. Please save all builds and refrain from rezzing no copy objects, as some regions may be taken offline and remain offline for extended periods of time. Please follow this blog for any updated information. [emphasis mine]

So for today, Wednesday and Thursday, expect severe disruption to SL.

Whether or not this maintenance is related to recent service outages / issues, the most recent of which occurred some 24 hours ago, is unclear. However, the forewarning is appreciated.

While I have been prone to avoid personal opinion in “news” items, that there is upcoming maintenance does prompt me to ask Linden Lab as to whether they could also broadcast a reminder in-world prior to the work commencing, for the benefit of those who may not routinely read the Status Page or who are not engaged on Twitter?

  1. Reblogged this on Becca's Blog and commented:
It was absolutely awful yesterday. I had a bit of a shopping spree on Marketplace yesterday morning (UK time) and 33% of my items failed to be delivered. Then in the afternoon I crashed and couldn’t get back on for ages and it said that logins had been disabled and to check the grid status page – which hadn’t been updated in 2 days.
And then today I got hit by a rolling restart on two different sims, both of which gave 5 mins notice to get out. 5 mins! What kind of notice is that.

Also, SCHEDULED maintenance is maintainance you know about beforehand. So how about publicising it?

  3. I’m just hoping they can get things reset to where they were before the crash. I know buying things has been a problem but a lot of us are seeing issues with sim crossings again.

  4. @Michele, that is an old Lab image which used to be shown in the Viewer when the grid was down. Refers to the “grid monkeys” who repaired stuff.

The Lab could tell us a little more, and a little more often. I have had odd problems for a week now, like not being able to rez things where I should be able to.

    1. AH, the old programing loop effect. LL has been stuck in the shower for years.
Lather > Rinse > Repeat (loop back) > Lather > Rinse > Repeat (loop back) > Lather > Rinse > Repeat (loop back) > Lather > Rinse > Repeat (loop back) >

  6. Oskar Linden at least told us what happened…

These issues were the result of a hardware failure in one of our datacenters. The issue was noticed immediately and acted upon within minutes. A key first step is intentionally disabling logins and billing. The second step is recovering the hardware or working around it. The third step is bringing services back online slowly to make sure all is well. This entire process took 30 minutes. Say what you will, but that is a very impressive response time. After core functionality was returned we focused on regions that had been affected and worked to get them stable again.

I know it is frustrating when events like this happen, and we understand the difficulties it is from your perspective. We react as quick as possible to stabilize the grid once events like this arise.

    1. I think an extra step needs to go in there. Right after “disabled logins” should be “updated the grid status”. In fact, why does disabling logins *automatically* make a one-line entry in the grid status? In fact, why does the grid status page not get automatically updated whenever the grid status changes?

    1. I’ve literally just logged out after some 2.5 hours in-world. Didn’t received any notification. At the time of writing this (03:25 BST / 19:25 PDT), no update on status on the Grid Status Page, last Twitter update from SLGridStatus 10 hours ago; last update from SecondLife (Official) on this actual subject, 9 hours ago.

I’m pleased that some did get in-world notification, but communications still appear to be badly sporadic.
